This event will be held at the Museu de História Natural e Jardim Botânico (MHNJB) da UFMG, a public botanical garden in the tropical metropolis of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. It aims to highlight the critical role of urban green spaces in supporting insect biodiversity and the essential ecosystem services insects provide—from pollination to nutrient cycling.
Activities include:
Thematic exhibition showcasing diverse insect collections (butterflies, ants, beetles, bees, and dragonflies).
Field equipment display demonstrating tools used in insect collection and research.
Interactive mini-lab with magnifying glasses, microscopes, and stereoscopes for close-up insect observation.
Guided nature trail for children (ages 7–12) to explore insect habitats.
Art exhibition featuring insect-inspired photography, drawings, and origami.
Through these activities, we aim to raise awareness about insects as keystone species and urban green areas as vital refuges for their conservation. The event will be led by experts and students from the Center of Ecological Synthesis and Conservation (CSEC/UFMG) and the Laboratory of Bee Ecology (UFOP), both public institutions in Minas Gerais. Their work aligns with the global URBIOCH project, which studies insect biodiversity patterns in urban green spaces across local to regional scales.
On June 28th, 2025, this free, family-friendly event will transform one of Belo Horizonte’s most visited green spaces into a hub of discovery. With support from the Botanical Garden staff, exhibitions will be strategically placed in high-traffic areas, and all tours will feature expert guidance.
