Charles Darwin was fascinated by bumblebees – their behaviour, life cycle and ecological importance.
His pioneering studies on bumblebees contributed to many of his publications, including On the Origin of Species.
In celebration of this, Down House holds a ‘Bumblebee Weekend’ each June to highlight the importance of bumblebees and Darwin’s work on them. This year’s event will take place over the weekend of 26th and 27th June.
There will be an exhibition illustrating some of Darwin’s investigations and, for younger visitors, a book reading and craft activity with a bumblebee focus.
We will be joined by officers of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust to help our visitors discover more about British bumblebees, many of which are in decline. They will also lead Bee Walks for visitors in the beautiful Down House gardens.
